Introduction

Keeping up with the latest issues of relevant journals is a great way to stay up-to-date with new research and expand your knowledge of the field.

Stay up-to-date with the latest scholarly publications

Most electronic journals will have an option to sign up for an email alert whenever a new issue is published.  This can be done via the journal website.

If you are academic staff or a student and know the specific journal you are after, you can search for it in Hunter by typing in the name of the journal and changing the dropdown menu to Journal Titles.

NHS staff can use their OpenAthens account to search the NHS A-Z of e-Journals and subscribe to content.

Many databases enable you to create alerts. This means you can automatically run a pre-defined search on a regular schedule (e.g. weekly or monthly). New content that matches your search is then fed to you by email or RSS feed, allowing you to keep abreast of the latest  scholarly information on your subject without having to re-enter the search terms into a database.

Some services can also alert you when new research has been published by a specific author, or when a specific author has been cited in another publication.

There are usually three basic steps to setting up an alert:

  1. Create a personal account for your database of choice so you can save your searches and set preferences.
  2. Define your search criteria.
  3. Opt to create an alert from your search and chose the format for receiving results and the schedule.

Services, such as ZETOC  (only available to  academic staff and students) and JournalTOCs, produce Tables of Contents (TOCs) from thousands of newly published journal issues and are free to use.

Upon registering, you will be asked to search for relevant journal titles or specific authors/keywords for which to set up alerts. You will then receive emails containing the Table of Contents whenever one of your chosen publications is uploaded.

 

 

 

 

Alternatively, you can set up email alerts direct from your favourite journal by signing up with your email address. This works well if you only have a small number of journals you want to keep abreast of . Academic users visit www.journals.sgul.ac.uk or NHS users try http://journals.nice.org.uk  to source a list of relevant journals.

The library provides a free literature searching service to support patient care, service evaluation and research.  Additionally we can set up an alert so that you receive emails about the newest publications in your area of interest.  Both clinical and non-clinical queries are accepted; simply complete the online form.

  You can also receive alerts to the latest Journal content  using an RSS feed.

Feedly and FeedReader are two of the most widely used examples. Once signed up click "Add content" to open a directory of RSS Feeds to which you can subscribe.  If the site you want is not in the directory just look for the RSS sign on their page; right click the sign to copy a link to the feed and paste it in.

RSS feeds can also be used to check for updates to many of your favourite websites, including podcasts, blogs, etc.
