Statistics - a guide

UK Government

Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) are the two main Government departments producing UK statistical information on health and health related subjects. Generally, their publications are freely available on their websites and form a good starting point for statistical information:

The Office of Health Economics (OHE) provide a free guide to UK Health and Health Care Statistics, which provides both up-to-date statistics and information on finding and using health statistics from the UK and some of the OECD countries.

You can access OHE’s guide online:

Journals are another good source for health statistics information.

Other Government departments

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) includes statistics on work-related ill-health, injuries, dangerous occurrences, enforcement and gas safety.

Office of Health Economics (OHE) links to various publications and information that were contained in the OHE Guide to Health and Health Care Statistics (formerly the Compendium of Health Statistics).

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) has statistics on public health topics including health protection and health improvement.
