Google and Google Scholar Search Guide

Overview

This guide provides instructions on how to effectively search Google and Google Scholar. Whereas Google searches public web content, Google Scholar searches across a wide range of academic material including peer-reviewed papers, academic books, theses and dissertation papers, conference papers, technical reports, and other scholarly literature. To navigate through this guide, select the tabs on the left-hand side for help with the following topics:

  • Google – using advanced search operators or the advanced search page
  • Google Scholar – using advanced search operators or the advanced search pop-up window; linking to the library (for SGUL and NHS users); exporting and saving results

Our on-call librarian service offers flexible support on library skills. There is no need to book, simply visit the Library Helpdesk between 10am and 2pm (Monday to Friday) and ask to speak to the on-call librarian.
