Zotero Reference Manager

This guide explains how to use Zotero, a free reference manager, to save, organise and cite your readings and resources.

PDF Viewer

Zotero 6 comes with an in-built PDF viewer, allowing you to annotate and make notes on citations in one location.

If your citation has a PDF attached, double-click on it to open the PDF in Zotero.

Using the circled icons at the top you can highlight text, add notes or comments and circle areas of importance. To add annotations, click on highlighted text, a note or a circled area.

To add longer notes for the whole item, click on the notebook icon in the top-right of Zotero:

Here you can click "Add Item Note" to input your own thoughts, summaries, quotations and so on. If you have highlighted or annotated text in the document, you can click "Add Item Note from Annotations" to automatically create a note containing all annotations, including intext citations and page numbers:

You can also add individual annotations to a note. To do so, first have a note open on the right hand site. Right click on an annotation, and then click "add to note". The annotation will be added with intext citation and page number to the desired note.
