One of Zotero's most useful features is the Zotero Connector. The connector is a browser extension that allows you to save references with a single click, with all the relevant information to cite it later.
The Connector is compatible with Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Safari, and is available from the downloads page. The examples shown here are taken from Zotero Connector for Microsoft Edge. The connector works similarly on Firefox, Chrome and Safari.
The connector is also compatible with bibliographic search tools and databases such as Medline, OVID and EBSCO. As shown above, you can use the connector to save individual references or several references from a search result.
For NHS users, the connector functions with NHS Knowledge and Library Hub and OpenAthens, allowing you to save single references or several from a search result.
If you need the PDF for citations you save from these resources, make sure you are logged in to your St George's or NHS OpenAthens account - otherwise they might not save automatically.
Once you have added the connector to your browser, it should appear as an icon at the end of your browser's search bar, in this case a Z:
When you visit a webpage, article, e-book or other potential source, the Connector will automatically detect the type of source you are looking at and the icon will change accordingly. To save what you are looking at as a citation in your library, simply click the icon.
Here, Zotero has identified a journal article through SAGE Journals. Clicking the icon has saved it to 'My Library', along with a fulltext PDF.
Opening Zotero, we can see the article has been saved in 'My Library', along with bibliographic information on the right.
And that's all you need to do. Zotero works with most resources available online - just check the icon in the top right and click to save. For online resources, Zotero saves a snapshot of the resource, as well as information about when you accessed the resource.
Zotero also works with Hunter, the University's library search tool. First, search for the desired item in Hunter. If it is an online resource, click "Full Text Available", as below.
From here, the Zotero Connector icon should change to the relevant resource - just click this and it will save details about the reference straight from Hunter. It may not always save a PDF, so make sure you download it separately if you need it.
You can do the same with physical resources - the Connector will automatically save bibliographic information about physical items you find in Hunter.
Saving multiple references
You can also save multiple search results in Hunter.
First, conduct a search using the terms you are interested in. The Zotero Connector icon should turn into a folder - click this and you will be presented with a list of citations from the result of your search. Tick the citations you want to keep, click "OK", and Zotero will save these to your library.
