What is it?

Oxford Reference provides access to dictionaries, companion texts and encylopedias from 25 different disciplines, including the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Oxford Reference is available to St George's students, St George's staff and NHS staff:

Why use it?

Oxford Reference provides dictionaries and encyclopedias from many disciplines. It can be used to quickly find an authoritative definition and history of key concepts in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Most entries also include further reading lists for those looking for more detail.

How do I use it?

There are a few ways to use Oxford Reference:

  • By subject type: use the "Subject" menu to locate reference texts from specific disciplines.
  • By book: search for a specific book within the Oxford Reference collection.
  • By entrysearch for individual entries in books from the Oxford Reference collection.

Limitations and Notes

  • A handful of texts are not available through St George's
  • Entries provide authoritative definitions, but should be evaluated critically as with all information. If possible, follow the further reading lists to gain a full understanding of topics covered.
