Humanities & Social Sciences Resource Guide

There are many options for finding resources from the humanities and social sciences, both within St George's and beyond. This guide outlines key resources and how to access them.

CORE

What is it?

CORE (COnnecting REpositories) is a research database and the world's largest collection of open access research papers. It is a comprehensive collection of open access papers from a range of journals and other sources.

Where can I access it?

CORE is available here.

CORE can also be accessed through St. George's A-Z databases list.

Why use it?

CORE provides access to a huge amount of literature, including resources from the arts, humanities and social sciences. All material is free and does not require registration to access; this makes it a useful tool for quickly finding journal articles and grey literature around a topic of interest.

How do I use it?

Visit the CORE website to search. You can use advanced search functions (e.g. AND/OR, phrase searching) as you would in Ovid and EBSCO databases. You can also use filters to search literature by date, language, resource type and discipline.

For help with searching databases, see our literature searching guide.

Limitations and Notes

  • Results will include grey literature including conference proceedings, lectures and dissertations. Use the "type" filter to search for journal articles
  • The search engine yields a lot of results, many of which might not be relevant - CORE is more appropriate if you are looking for specific items rather than searching around a topic or keyword
